The group meets the first Friday of each month at noon at Gere Public Library, Lincoln.

A Child Health Specialty Clinic formerly operating in offices in Waterloo and Dubuque is up and running in Fayette County. The combined clinic --- one of 12 in Iowa --- opened in February at 212 Eighth Ave. SE in Oelwein. The centers are administered through the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics' Department of Pediatrics and funded in part by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Fort Wayne Asperger's Support Group meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in a meeting room adjacent to the cafeteria, Lutheran Hospital, 7950 W. Jefferson Blvd. The group meets the second Thursday of every month. Northeast Indiana Autism Parents Support Group meets 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Tahcumwah Center, 1701 Freeman St. The children play in a contained environment, while the parents talk.

Central Illinois children with autism now have more options at an Illinois State University clinic, thanks to its joining a broader state group. The Autism Program of Springfield, which began three years ago with sites in Chicago, Springfield and Carbondale, has added program sites in Champaign and Normal.

Karlins Center, in Plymouth, offers a specialized day program for adults with autism or who need more support because of behavioral issues.

The Lawrence chapter of Autism Society of America meets regularly at Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing clinic, 2132 Haworth Hall, Kansas University campus.

The education students receive for working with the children depends largely on the child's parents. "In the first family I worked with, the education began with getting the child acclimated to a new person - me," says Evans, a psychology and English double major. "Then it moved on to introducing new programs and different concepts. I did a lot of reading and watching videos. I had to go through a two-week training program for the Franklin County Board of MRDD and become certified in CPR and first aid for another family."

a private, nonprofit organization formed by parents of children with disabilities and chronic illnesses in the state of Montana for the purpose of information, support, training and assistance to aid their children at home, school and as adults.

Cicero-based Agape Therapeutic Riding Center has received a $2,050 grant to help fund a new summer adventure camp for teenagers and young adults with autism. The weeklong program will give participants three hours each day to do activities such as ride horses and experience "sensory integration," getting them comfortable with different sounds, textures and colors, said Kevin Allender, director of resource development at Agape.

It's a special five week summer camp where autistic children take field trips and participate in activities ranging from arts and crafts to group games. On Tuesday, 14 children from the Reach N Teach Summer Camp took a field trip to the Chalk Box on Main Avenue. The children, ages 3 to 16, experienced some gymnastic moves on the equipment.

The Lawrence Autism Society wants to work closely with the Kansas Coalition for Autism, Brockman said. KCAL is an independent group of parents, service providers and other professionals advocating for legislation that supports the autism community in Kansas. It was co-founded by Michael Wasmer, who has served on the Kansas Governor's Commission on Autism.
