Hawkins Institute was founded in 1995 by Gail Hawkins to offer a service that helps people with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and more able autism acquire vocational skills and find meaningful work. A walk through the front door of the new upscale café, Niche Coffee & Tea, located at 1364 Danforth Ave., is a blow to all the senses. .. Hawkins' Institute, where Hawkins is the executive director, sits directly above the café. It is an employment training and assessment facility, for people with Asperger syndrome, a disorder characterized by autistic-like behaviours. Hawkins said the institute has been very successful for twelve years now and wants the café to serve as an extension. "My hope is to be able to give some apprenticeships to people with asperger syndrome at some point," she said.

Preschool autistic children in southwestern New Brunswick now have their own support centre. With the opening of the Stepping Stones agency in Saint John on Friday, children who had been limited to one hour of therapy a week can have up to 20 hours of care.
